GLADE, Va. (WOWT) - The Omaha Public Power District’s mutual aid crews are continuing their mission to help restore power along the East Coast amid the devastation left behind by Hurricane Helene.

OPPD provided an update Wednesday stating that its crew is now moving south to Glade, Virginia, after spending the past two days in the Beckley, West Virginia area restoring power in rural parts of the Appalachian Mountains, which the locals refer to as the “hollers.”

The crews are in good spirits, OPPD said, and continue to provide a helping hand to Appalachian Power company in the effort to get electricity back to the regions hardest hit by Helene.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Helene’s death toll had reached 179 people and still more than 1.1 million customers were without power in Georgia and the Carolinas alone.
