Four boys arrested after fatal shooting in northwest Omaha
Boys ages 11-17 detained after chase through three counties
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - A 64-year-old man is dead and four boys were taken into custody for questioning following a multi-agency chase after a shooting late Tuesday night.
Omaha Police officers responding to a report of a cutting just before midnight near 93rd Street and Cady Avenue found Mursal Jama with a gunshot wound. Omaha Fire Department medics transported him via ambulance to CUMC-Bergan Mercy Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Hours later, four boys were taken into custody after a chase across three counties.
Each of the boys — ages 11, 13, 14 and 17 — were later booked on one count criminal homicide, two counts of robbery, and three counts use of a weapon to commit a felony. The 13-year-old is also facing a warrant for unlawful absence, while the 14-year-old was booked on an additional firearms charge.
A chance encounter helped authorities track the boys down.
Authorities said they first spotted them at about 1 a.m. in Nebraska City — about 53 miles from the scene of a murder that had happened about an hour earlier in Omaha — when a police officer noticed the vehicle was parked at a Nebraska City gun shop. The officer took notice not only because of the late hour, but also because the shop had been burglarized only the day before; someone threw a big rock through the glass window and stole at least a half-dozen guns.
The driver of the SUV took off when the officer approached. The officer gave chase.
Nebraska State Patrol told 6 News on Wednesday afternoon that they were made aware that Otoe County deputies were now in pursuit of a black Kia Sportage, with Cass County deputies taking over the chase as it continued north. NSP said they were told the occupants of the Kia had been involved in a gun shop burglary, and that the same vehicle had fled the scene of a shooting in Omaha on Tuesday night.
NSP told 6 News the chase reached speeds of 120 mph on Highway 75.
“A trooper was able to successfully deploy stop sticks to the slow the vehicle, and troopers took over the pursuit as the vehicle continued northbound,” NSP told 6 News.
The Kia exited the highway at L Street and continued westbound. NSP said the vehicle at times crossed into oncoming lanes of traffic, then turned and headed north on 46th Street — at which point someone jumped from the moving vehicle.
“A trooper was able to quickly take that subject into custody without incident,” NSP told 6 News.
An OPD report states that the black Kia crashed, and three boys fled from the vehicle. Authorities weren’t able to immediately locate the other three suspects.
Then just before 4 a.m. Wednesday, OPD said officers received a call that three boys were at a South Omaha residence asking to be let inside. When officers arrived, the boys fled; officers chased them down on foot and were able to take the three boys into custody.
OPD is continuing to investigate the incident.
