Omaha man was walking to church when killed in hit-and-run, family says
Police still searching for driver of vehicle
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - An 89-year-old man is dead and the person responsible is still at-large.
Walter Tighe loved his family and his faith. His granddaughter tells 6 News it was faith on his mind in the last moments of his life.
He had seven grand children, and Kassie Tighe is one of them.
Walter would always wear a hat — a distinct style of fedora. On social media Tuesday morning, Kassie saw that a car had struck an elderly man near 35th and Center Street in Omaha.
“The people in the comments were like, ‘Yeah, we saw a fedora,’” Kassie said. “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ My heart sank.”
She knew deep down that it was her grandfather.

Walter was on his way to church — his destination twice a day.
“He stopped driving in 2018, so of course he was going to walk,” Kassie said. “He was healthy has a horse, walking four miles a day.”
He was just two blocks from Our Lady of Lourdes when police say a silver pickup truck struck him. Officers located the truck Wednesday, but the person who was behind the wheel remains to be found.
“You left a man in the street,” Kassie said. “There’s no other feeling besides anger.”
Kassie hopes the person responsible for taking the life of her loving grandfather comes forward.
“He went out of this world with the same amount of love he came in with,” Kassie said.
Police are still asking the public for help in tracking down the suspect in the deadly hit-and-run. Anyone with information on the suspect vehicle or its owner is urged to contact OPD or submit a tip via Omaha Crime Stoppers. To do so, click here or call 402-444-STOP.
