Huskers try to move past OT loss to Illinois as they hit road for first time
LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) - Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule spoke Monday at his weekly news conference ahead of the Huskers’ game at Purdue on Saturday.
The Big Red is coming off a Friday night overtime loss at home against then-ranked 24th Illinois. The loss to open the Big Ten slate was Nebraska’s first of the season.
Friday night was a costly night for Nebraska on the injury front as well. Rhule gave an update on two players Monday afternoon. Left tackle Turner Corcoran will be out for a while with a hamstring injury. Cornerback Tommi will is day-to-day with a foot injury.
Rhule revealed Monday that former NFL and Huskers kicker Brett Maher has been with the team since training camp helping the kickers.
Friday, Iowa Western CC transfer John Hohl got the start at place kicker for the Huskers. Hohl made a 21-yard field goal in the first quarter against Illinois and three extra points, however, the redshirt freshman missed a 39-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter.
As for sophomore kicker Tristan Alvano, last year’s starter for the Huskers, Rhule said the Wednesday before the Illinois game the staff chose to shut Alvano down due to a nagging injury form the summer that hadn’t gotten better.
This week, the 3-1 Huskers head into West Lafayette, Indiana to take on 1-2 Purdue in their first road game of the season. Kickoff is at 11 a.m. CT and will be streamed on Peacock.
