Creighton softball celebrates Senior Day, earns No. 3 seed in Big East Tournament
Providence wins game three, 2-0, thanks to an early two run shot

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Thanks to a two-run homer in the top of the first inning from Providence, Creighton came up short of the series sweep. While the Bluejays weren’t able to finish the regular season with a victory, it doesn’t mean they’re done adding W’s to the win column. Despite Sunday’s loss, Creighton claimed the three-seed in next week’s BIG EAST Tournament.
It is the first time in six years the Bluejays have played into the postseason and just the third time in program history Creighton has made the BIG EAST Tournament. The last time CU earned a spot in the conference tournament was in 2018. None of the Jays’ six seniors have ever played beyond the regular season.
“Postseason, postseason, postseason. I am so excited to say postseason,” said senior left fielder Cayla Nielsen after playing in her final game at the CU Sports Complex. “We’ve been wanting this for five years, some of us four years. It’s just a lot of emotions, but I’m just so grateful. I’ve said that probably five times today but I’m just glad that we get another game and possibly a couple more games with this squad because it truly is special.”
“They definitely made their mark on the program this year,” said Creighton second-year head coach Krista Wood. “I’m really proud of them. Finishing this season 33-20, making the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time in a while. They’ve done a lot of great things individually and as a team. I’m super proud of them and I said, ‘yeah, today we came up short, but we’re not done yet. So get ready for the conference tournament.’”
The Jays honored seniors Elly Beeson, Jena Lawrence, Alyssa Gappa, Emma Rosonke, Madeline Vejvoda, and Neilsen after their final home game.
Third-seeded Creighton will face sixth-seeded Butler on Wednesday, May 8 at 2 p.m. CT in Providence, RI.
