Fontenelle Forest’s Acorn Acres now more accessible
BELLEVUE, Neb. (WOWT) - Fontenelle Forest is getting set to reopen Acorn Acres which has been renovated to make the playscape more accessible.
The upgrades include graded ground to accommodate mobility aids, and new signage with high-contrast colors that are translated into Spanish and Braille.
The playground is designed to give children a space to grow their confidence in nature. Fontenelle Forest says the project is a jumping off point for them.
“We want to truly be able to inspire that next generation regardless of some of the barriers that they may encounter,” said Michelle Foss, director of operations. “While we can’t alleviate all barriers to nature and nature play, we are making a concerted effort to try to make it more inclusive for more people.”
Acorn Acres will open to the public Wednesday, Oct. 9.
Updates to the flat paths will be completed later in the fall. The current paths are made of decomposed granite.
