Drought conditions continue to worsen across Nebraska, Iowa
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - In the latest drought monitor issued Thursday, conditions have worsened across the Omaha area.
Severe drought has spread across a majority of the area, generally to the north-northwest and south-southwest of the metro. Moderate drought has increased as well, with areas under abnormal dryness to the southeast.
This is a big change from just three months ago! On July 9th, Iowa was completely drought free with a majority of the state of Nebraska drought free as well. Now, nearly 98% of Iowa is experiencing abnormally dry conditions or worse with all of Nebraska experiencing some level of dry conditions or drought.
This comes as no surprise as the Omaha area has been very dry so far this season of fall and for the month of October. In fact, no rain has been recorded at Eppley so far in this month with only 0.3″ of rain recorded since August 14th.
The Omaha area is on track to see the driest September and October on record with only 0.09″ of rain recorded for both months combined. We may see a little bit of rain before the end of October, though. You can stay up to date with upcoming rain chances with the 6 First Alert Forecast.
