OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Fremont senior outside hitter Mattie Dalton has terminated 270 balls so far this season, making her the total kills leader in Class A in Nebraska. The next closest player has 185 kills.

“I really just have the memory of a goldfish,” said Dalton. “I think each point I’m going to score and whatever happens on the last point-- good or bad– I’m always looking ahead to see what I’m going to do next time.”

For the first time since Dalton’s freshman year, Fremont beat Lincoln Pius X. In the three-set sweep of the Thunderbolts, Dalton recorded 27 kills on a .373 hitting percentage.

“Mattie has this ability to find the hole on the court,” said Tigers co-head coach Sue Wewel. “I’ve coached a lot of girls over my lifetime and... when she goes up to hit she knows where she’s going to put the ball and she can find a place to get a point for us.”

“If we’re just getting it over the net, what are we going to do that’s going to create chaos on the other side?” said Dalton. “And when you’re in a perfect situation obviously you just hit the crap out of the ball.”

Fremont High School has had a different head volleyball coach each of the last five years. Despite the constant change at the helm, the eight players that make up the Class of 2025 have rooted the Tigers. Fremont is off to a 16-2 to start the season.

“When you go to any school and you hear ‘eight seniors’ I think everybody is just like ‘wow,’” said Dalton. “But I think, especially in a community like Fremont, eight seniors means that’s eight girls I’ve been playing with for 10, 12 years now.”

Come December, Dalton will have her high school diploma in hand and will be headed to Grand Forks, North Dakota where she’ll be suiting up for the Fighting Hawks’ volleyball team.
