Atlantic Police respond to threats made to school district

ATLANTIC, Iowa (WOWT) - The Atlantic Police Department is investigating a threat made on social media to the Atlantic School District, a social media post said Monday.

According to the post, a threat was posted to social media that targeted two buildings was investigated.

Police say that the school is not in any danger and that school will continue as scheduled, but a 12-year-old was taken into custody.

The juvenile is being charged with Threats of Terrorism and False Reports to or Communications with Public Safety Entities. The juvenile was taken into custody and transported to a juvenile detention center.

The Atlantic Police Department will be providing heightened security at Atlantic Community School District buildings in the coming week.

The Atlantic Police Department worked with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and the Atlantic Community School District in the investigation. Contact was also made with the Iowa Governor’s Safety Bureau in regards to the incident.
