Lincoln 10-year-old brings gun to school, another student finds it stashed behind toilet
LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - A 10-year-old student at Belmont Elementary School brought a gun to school on Thursday after finding the weapon at a nearby park several days earlier, according to the Lincoln Police Department.
Police said the boy showed the gun to other students, who initially believed it was a toy. A search of the student and the school came up empty, but later, another student discovered the firearm behind a toilet and alerted a staff member.
Officers were called to the school after the gun was found. “We don’t believe anyone was ever in danger,” LPD public information officer Erika Thomas said.
Thomas added the .380 caliber pistol was “rusty and inoperable and not loaded at the time”.
Authorities conducted interviews with students and parents late into Thursday evening, with parents reportedly cooperating with the investigation.
