Nebraska issues health alert for harmful algae

The State of Nebraska is issuing a health alert regarding algae that has been found in lakes in the area.

LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) - The State of Nebraska has issued a health warning for harmful algae found in three lakes.

In their statement, the state took samples from three lakes, Rockford Lake in Gage County, Fremont Lake No. 9 in Dodge County, and Bluestem Lake in Lancaster County.

The statement calls to attention harmful blue-green algae, which samples from the three lakes found toxins from the algae above the threshold to harm humans.

The public is advised to not expose themselves to the water in the lakes, as designated swimming areas at the lakes will be closed. Fishing and boating is still permitted.
