O’NEILL, Neb. (KSNB) - Holt County authorities revealed Tuesday that a vehicle crash damaging a gas line at St. Patrick’s Parish Center triggered the explosion that rocked the O’Neill community early Monday morning.

The new details on the investigation came from a joint press release from the O’Neill Police Department and Holt County Attorney.

First responders were called to the scene of an explosion and structure fire Monday around 6 a.m. on the St. Mary’s & St. Patrick’s campus.

Once on the scene, authorities found a vehicle they believe was involved in the incident. Police, assisted by the Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol, ATF, and Holt County Attorney’s Office, launched an investigation.

Investigators identified the driver as a 58-year-old man from Guatemala. He cooperated with authorities through an interpreter before being transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center. His condition remains unknown.

Authorities said there is no evidence, based on witness statements and medical records, that the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Initial findings suggest that the vehicle collided with the gas line feeding into the parish center approximately 50 minutes before the explosion. The gas then leaked into the building and ignited, causing the explosion and fire.

The blast caused significant damage to nearby homes, classrooms, and the hospital. Officials stated the investigation is ongoing, with additional updates to follow.
