OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Vikings heavyweight Tyson Twrry may have just put the bow on his third consecutive undefeated season on the mat with a third state title, however, Terry;s junior campaign = held more adversity and growth than his spotless record may indicate.

“It was a good season. [There was] some family situations that I had to deal with and I feel like that kinda gave me some more motivation and some different things like that– some more fire to top off the season,” said Terry reflecting on the year.

“He had some things going on this year and I think he had to focus more on this room and developing not only himself but some other kids that came into our program,” said Omaha North head boys wrestling coach Dan Carlson.

After sitting atop Nebraska high school wrestling for three straight years and owning a 136-0 record, the question that then follows Terry is how do you keep it up for one more year?

Terry’s answer: “Trying my best not to be complacent I guess.”

“Thankful for family and coaches for staying on me and making sure I’m not just going through the motions in practice,” said Terry.

“Everyone just assumes his success is going to be there. It’s not like that in the sport of wrestling,” said Carlson. “You have to show up every day and work just as hard or if not harder than you did the day before.”

While Terry dominates on the mat, the Omaha native is just as good on the gridiron. The junior committed last June to play football at Nebraska.

“To see a kid from freshman year to go play at the division one level in any sport would be awesome,” said Carlson. “[It’s] a proud moment not only for the school but for the coaches involved.”
