HUTCHINSON, Kan. (KWCH/Gray News) - A small explosion injured several people at a food trailer during the Kansas State Fair.

The incident happened around 6:25 p.m. at the “Fry Shack,” located at 500 20th Avenue on the fairgrounds. Police said the call was originally described as a workplace accident involving a small explosion.

The trailer is owned by D Dusek Concessions. Investigators determined the cause to be the overpressure of a canned food product stored near a food warmer. The canned food item got too hot, causing the explosion.

Six people were hurt, but the state fire marshal confirmed none of the injuries were life-threatening. Two people were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Witnesses said they heard the explosion.

“We were walking by and it sounded like a big bomb,” fairgoer Hailey Crank said. “Everybody started running, we all ducked.”

The Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Hutchinson Fire Department are investigating the incident.
