Lincoln community gathers for first annual Missing Persons Day in Nebraska
LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Dozens of people with missing loved ones from across the state and county gathered at the First Christian Church for a ceremony of commemoration for the first annual Missing Persons Day in Nebraska.
The morning service on Thursday consisted of tearful testimonials, with a trail commemorating the hundreds of missing people who never came home leading up to the pulpit.
Family and friends of missing loved ones told 10/11 News that they found comfort in the company of each other, working through their shared griefs.
“I can’t imagine dying without having an answer, but it’s very uplifting knowing that all of us here share those same things. We all have the same grief. You know, we all have the same questions,” Lonnie Goodrich, whose son has been missing for almost a year, said.
Donna Knebel said her daughter has been missing for 15 years.
“You’ll constantly grieve because you don’t know until you have a final answer. There’s no closure. It’s like falling in a well with a bottomless pit,” Knebel said.
The organizers said a big part of the battle is spreading the word and making sure people know who is missing and what they look like.
