Omaha Police stress safety as students go back to school
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - School is back in session across the metro, and with it comes an emphasis on safety.
Omaha Police Lieutenant Charles Ott says the biggest message this school year is: if you see something, say something.
OPD is encouraging kids to report any concerns or possible threats to teachers or police before anything gets worse.
Ott says its important for parents and guardians to keep track of their students’ social media activity as well.
“It’s used in bullying, we have numerous reports of that. So, it’s obviously a concern, and we ask the parents, please be monitoring what your kids are accessing. All the platforms, please be aware because that does lead to problems whether or not it’s bullying, assaults, fights things like that, its a huge issue for us,” Ott said.
He says parents should also keep an eye out for any behavioral changes or changes in the routine of your student.
Ott recommends asking open-ended questions to get more of a conversation going, such as: “Tell me about your day.”
