LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - For 12 years in a row, the Team Jack Foundation’s Radiothon has been raising money for pediatric brain cancer research.

Throughout the day on Thursday, families will share stories of how they’ve been impacted by childhood brain cancer, all while raising money and awareness across the state.

Kylie Dockter, executive director of the foundation, said Nebraska has one of the highest mortality rates for pediatric brain cancer in the country.

“In the last probably four weeks we were introduced to five new families who’ve been affected by the disease, three of which have DIPG which is a type of brain tumor that’s basically a death sentence,” she said. “I think what people don’t realize is that it’s happening right here in Nebraska to our Nebraska kids.”

Dockter said one of the biggest priorities the foundation is working on is a brain tumor program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Children’s Hospital, where they’ve given $6.5 million.

The foundation says the first year they raised about $40,000. Last year that number reached $175,000, and this year the goal is $200,000.

To listen in, you can visit the Team Jack Foundation website, where the Radiothon is being streamed live. There’s also a list of 25 stations broadcasting the show if you’d like to find one close to you.

Donations are open until 6 p.m. on Thursday, and you can call in at 855-RUN-JACK or visit their website to donate.

There will also be a cash raffle and prizes such as vacations, coolers and signed Husker volleyballs given out throughout the day.
