Omaha Police: Man crashes stolen tow truck into several cars, 5-year-old injured
OPD says man worked for towing company, was recently terminated
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Traffic was backed up at a busy intersection west of Highway 75 during the Wednesday evening commute after a stolen tow truck hit multiple vehicles.
In an update Thursday, police said that that the man driving the stolen tow truck worked for the towing company -- and was recently terminated.
Omaha Police Sgt. Jason Menning told 6 News at the scene that a driver believed to be intoxicated ran a red light at 30th Street while traveling eastbound on Cuming Street in a stolen tow truck at a high rate of speed.
OPD said he struck three different vehicles before careening into the Hiland Dairy parking lot, where he hit six more cars.
A total of five people were transported to the hospital — none of which suffered life-threatening or critical injuries, according to OPD. Sgt. Menning said the suspect himself as well as a 5-year-old child were among the victims treated.
OPD told 6 News the driver of the tow truck — which had been stolen from a private business — will be facing criminal charges.
The intersection at 30th and Cuming has reopened after being closed for three hours following the crash.
